World Food Day: Embracing Sustainability and Reducing Food Waste

Today (Oct 16 2024) marks World Food Day, an important reminder of our role in promoting food security. As global food production plays a significant role in climate change, it’s essential that we embrace sustainable practices and work to minimise food waste.

Why Sustainability Matters: Sustainable food systems prioritise environmental health, support local economies, and promote social equity. By choosing local, organic, and seasonal foods, we can reduce our carbon footprint and support farmers who practice responsible agriculture.

The Challenge of Food Waste:

Approximately 19% of food available to consumers is wasted at various stages, including retail, food service, and households.

Additionally, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that around 13% of food is lost in the supply chain, from post-harvest to the point of sale.

Did you know that approximately One fifth of all food is wasted globally generating upto 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions? This not only squanders valuable resources—like water and energy—but also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. By minimising food waste, we can play a vital role in combating climate change and ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious food.

At Singular Intelligence, we recognise the importance of minimising food waste, especially in the supply chain. Through our solutions under the CatmanAI™ brand, we offer four key strategies to help reduce food waste:

  1. Demand Forecasting: Utilise advanced algorithms to predict consumer demand more accurately, ensuring that food supply matches actual needs and reducing excess inventory.

  2. Inventory Management: Implement real-time tracking and smart inventory management systems to minimise spoilage and optimise stock levels, ensuring that food is used before it expires.

  3. Risk Analytics: Analyse data across the supply chain to identify risks and inefficiencies and areas for improvement, allowing businesses to streamline operations and reduce waste.

  4. Supply Chain Resilience through Collaboration Platforms: Foster partnerships between producers, retailers, and consumers through platforms that facilitate the sharing of surplus food, helping to redirect excess stock to those in need. Collaborative decision making between supply chain partners can reduce the food waste

We have 3 solutions under our umbrella brand CatmanAI™ which can minimise food waste.

  1. Digital Shelf-Life AI : Validated by Vitacress and Sainsbury’s with an estimated 40% reduction of food waste at Farm Level and Factory Level and a 40% Estimated increase in sell through of fresh, perishable products at retailer level.

  2. Achieving a 90% Reduction of food waste per SKU in the Pork Supply Chain for Sainsbury's

  3. On the supply side pig over-slaughtering decreased by 11%, leading to a remarkable 14% increase in revenue per pig for a leading meat supplier Cranswick in UK.
